Power wheelchair range testing and energy consumption during fatigue testing

The range of a power wheelchairs and medicare power wheelchairs depends on many factors including: battery type, battery state, wheelchair/rider weight, terrain, the efficiency of the drive train, and driving behavior. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the feasibility of three methods of estimating power wheelchair range. Another significant purpose was to compare the current draw on pavement to current draw on an International Standards Organization (ISO) Double Drum tester at one m/sec. Tests were performed on seven different power wheelchairs unloaded, and loaded with an ISO 100 kg test dummy. Each chair was configured according to the manufacturer’s specifications, and tires were properly inflated. Experienced test technicians were used for the tennis court tests, and treadmill tests. An ISO 100 kg test dummy was used for the ISO Double Drum test. Energy consumption was measured over a distance of 1500 m for each of the three test conditions. The rolling surface was level in all cases. Repeated measure analysis of variance (ANOVA) revealed a significant difference (p = 0.0001) between the predicted range at maximum speed for the three tests. Post hoc analysis demonstrated a significant difference (p < 0.01) in estimated range at maximum speed between the Double Drum test and the treadmill test, as well as between the Double Drum test and the tennis court test. Our results indicate no significant difference (p > 0.05) between the predicted range at maximal speed between the treadmill and tennis court tests. A simple relationship does not exist between the results of range testing with the Double Drum tester and the tennis court. An alternative would be to permit the use of a treadmill for range testing as simple relationships between all pertinent treadmill and tennis court range data were found. For the Double Drum tester used, the current demand is higher than under normal usage. This presents a problem as current is related to load torque in a power wheelchair. Hence, the Double Drum tester friction must be reduced. The predicted range for the tennis court test at maximum speed ranges from a low of 23.6 km to a high of 57.7 km. The range of the power wheelchair can be improved by the use of wet lead acid batteries in place of gel lead acid batteries.

Students at El Camino High School Detox Doctor Malibu Testing

An average of 40 student athletes from Oceanside and El Camino High schools are tested weekly for marijuana, cocaine, amphetamines, heroin, and alcohol. Additionally, grant funding allows the district to test roughly half of the testing population for steroids.

Very few student athletes test positive for detox malibu; since the program resumed in October 2005, there has only been one positive opiate detox malibu test. The district provides intervention services for students testing positive.

Using the absorbed power method to evaluate effectiveness of vibration absorption of selected seat cushions during manual wheelchair propulsion

Although power wheelchairs and power wheelchairs users are frequently subjected to oscillatory and shock vibrations, little research has been conducted to assess the whole-body vibration exposure of wheelchair users. The purpose of this study was to determine if selected wheelchair cushions alter potentially harmful whole-body vibrations transferred to wheelchair users. Thirty-two participants, who use wheelchairs as their primary mode of mobility, contributed to this study. Four of the most commonly prescribed wheelchair cushions were selected. Participants were asked to propel their wheelchair over a simulated activities of daily living (ADL) course while acceleration and force data were recorded. A repeated measures ANOVA showed no significant differences between the different cushions for the total averaged absorbed power (p = 0.190), the 50 mm curb drop (p = 0.234), or the rumble strip (p = 0.143). A repeated measure ANOVA for the peak curb drop absorbed power revealed a significant difference in the cushions (p = 0.043). The cushions that were most effective in this testing appear to be the Invacare Pindot and the Varilite Solo. Not only did those cushions appear to have the lowest values much of the time but also they did not display the highest values. When comparing results from a similar study, absorbed power appears to be as effective in determining vibration effects in the time domain as the methods in the ISO 2631 Standard.

Ice in Hawaii?

Our Hawaii “ice storm” is now a decade old and shows no clear sign of ending. Our 4-year-old managed care dual-diagnosis program called Community Care Service is working on this disaster. Initially, we found 30 days of residential drug rehab dallas to be effective until we realized the ice relapse pattern is often delayed longer than cocaine slips. drug rehab los angeles must often be extended.

The ice addict may reuse after 50 days, and the addiction is severe, each slip producing an immediate paranoid psychosis. The “meth run” completely empties the dopamine storage system, and the resulting dysphoria and paranoia seem relentless. NIDA’s positron emission technology (PET) scans confirm what users claim: It takes three months for the dopamine depletion to recover. Amino acid nutrients, such as QUIT vitamins with neurotransmitter replacements, are sometimes helpful. These drug survivors, however, are in for a long journey. It takes months before there is any light in the tunnel; sometimes it is a train wreck, but sometimes it is freedom.

We have recently connected our research with the Honolulu drug court. It provides the bridge to a therapeutic locus of control. This drug court, with a census of 180(+), obtains weekly drug screens and ensures daily contact with group therapy. It also adds cognitive “restructuring”, provides transportation to appointments, and monitors via home visits and intensive in-community outreach. Dr. Charles Bogdahn and I are doing a small research study on recovering ice hallucinators in the drug court system.

Characterization of power wheelchair use in the home and community

OBJECTIVE: To characterize the use of power wheelchairs and power wheelchairs to determine if multiple measures of mobility and occupancy jointly provide a more comprehensive picture of wheelchair usage and daily activity in full-time power wheelchair users than daily distance alone. DESIGN: Prospective observational study. SETTING: Subjects’ everyday mobility was measured in their homes and communities for 2 weeks, and prompted recall interviews were conducted by phone. PARTICIPANTS: A convenience sample (N=25) of nonambulatory, full-time power wheelchair users. INTERVENTIONS: Not applicable. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Wheelchair usage was logged electronically, and geolocation and interview data were used to isolate chair use to (1) in the home, (2) not in the home indoors, or (3) outdoors. Distance wheeled, time spent wheeling, number of bouts, time spent in the wheelchair, and the percentage of time in the wheelchair spent wheeling were measured to describe wheelchair use. RESULTS: The median wheelchair user spent 10.6 hours (range, 5.0-16.6h) in his/her wheelchair daily and wheeled 1.085 km (range, 0.238-10.585 km) over 58 minutes (range, 16-173 min) and 110 bouts (range, 36-282 bouts). Wheelchair use varied across subjects, within subjects from day to day, and between environments. Mobility bouts outdoors were longer and faster than those wheeled indoors. In a regression analysis, distance wheeled explained only 33% of the variation in the number of bouts and 75% in the time spent wheeling. CONCLUSIONS: Power wheelchair use varies widely both within and between users. Measuring distance, time, and number of bouts provides a clearer picture of mobility patterns than measuring distance alone, whereas occupancy helps to measure wheelchair function in daily activities.

OMG Green Buttons to help Stop Drug Abuse

The students launched the first phase of the campaign in the opening weeks of the school year by passing out thousands of small green buttons with the letters OMG. OMG is commonly used by youth in electronic text messaging as an expression of surprise or joy or as a call to pay attention. The buttons developed a buzz of curiosity in the school. In phase two of the campaign, the students distributed 300 T-shirts and 5,000 static cling decals with the phrase 2outta3. Finally, the entire message was revealed through the dissemination of 1,150 T-shirts and 5,000 silicone wrist bands with the message, 2outta3 Dont Drink. To reinforce the message, addiction treatment malibu and the coalition has printed news releases, newspaper articles, and newsletters. Research has shown that the strategy of using a social norms message is effective in reducing the rate of underage drinking and changing the perceptions of youth and adults.

Use of three gait-training strategies in an individual with multiple, chronic strokes

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: There is little information available regarding gait-training interventions for people with chronic, multiple strokes who are nonambulatory. The purpose of this case report is to describe the feasibility and power wheelchairs, power wheelchairs outcome of three different task-oriented gait-training techniques in an individual with chronic, multiple strokes who was not able to ambulate independently. CASE: The participant was a 61-year-old man with chronic quadriparesis resulting from five brainstem strokes sustained over five years previously. He maintained home and community mobility with a power wheelchair but sought to ambulate home and short community distances without assistance. Three six-week gait-training interventions were implemented sequentially twice per week: (1) overground gait training with manual assistance, (2) body weight-supported treadmill training (BWSTT), and (3) overground gait training with variable task practice. OUTCOME: Independent home and short community ambulation was not achieved by this individual after these interventions. However, he improved gait speed and endurance as well as balance over the 18-week intervention period. DISCUSSION: There appeared to be no advantage to BWSTT over traditional gait training for this individual, as improvement was noted during all three interventions at a comparable rate. Although these gait-training interventions facilitated gains in gait and balance measures during the treatment, no change in functional ambulation status was achieved. Given the time, financial, and labor demands involved with BWSTT and the lack of apparent benefit, traditional overground therapeutic intervention was reasonable and appropriate for this participant with a history of chronic, multiple strokes.
